Write to Russ

Hey there, I’m Reghan and I really liked the solar eclipse story. Can you put more of them?
Nice to meet you, Reghan. We wrote a lot of articles about the eclipse on April 8. The next solar eclipse is on October 2, 2024. But there won't be a total solar eclipse until August 2026! We'll be sure to write stories about future eclipses. 🌞 🌚 🌎

How's your day Russ? When the eclipse happened I was shocked, speechless. It was the best day of my life. Like, how is it day time when it's night time?
My day is great, Musa! Thanks for asking. And thanks for sharing your eclipse experience. Sounds like you had a very special time. I'm sure you'll always remember it!

Hi, my name is Molly. I live in Ontario, Canada. I like to figure skate, read, write, swim, play piano and other instruments, and play softball. I have a few questions. First, if there is a North and South America, how come only people in the USA are called Americans? Also, do you think one day you could make an article about the Ottawa team in the PWHL? Sorry, I hope that’s not too much for you to answer.
No need to apologize, Molly! Those are great questions. The USA stands for the "United States of America," so "Americans" usually refers to people from that country. We will write about the PWHL when the regular season ends in May. Do you think Ottawa will make the playoffs? Thanks for telling me about your interests. I enjoyed learning about you! ⛸️ πŸ“– πŸ“ 🎹 πŸ₯Ž

Hi Russ! I loved the story about the girl that went to the White House. It was cool to learn the history of Japan and America and how they are close friends.
I loved that story too, Abbey! I'm so glad that Rose shared her experience at the White House and how the event represented her cultures.

Hi, Russ it is me Leigha. It is so nice how AWB keeps the solar eclipse glasses and sells them to country's that need them.
Hi, Leigha. I agree, AWB does great work to reduce waste and create ways for other people to see eclipses. Here's more good news: AWB says it does not sell the glasses! When you send your eclipse glasses to AWB, the group gives them away to people who need them for free! πŸ•ΆοΈβ˜€οΈ

Hey, Russ! How do I get my picture on picture of the day?
Hey, Dylan! News-O-Matic readers send in many drawings each day. I look at all of them, but I can only pick 10. Usually, I pick drawings that are connected to the articles in News-O-Matic. So, drawings that relate to recent stories are more likely to be on Pictures of the Day!

Hey, Russ. Did you like the eclipse? I sure did, but I have a question. How do eclipse glasses work? Why can’t I just use sunglasses?
Hey, Harper. Thanks for asking! It was cloudy where I was, so I didn't get to see much of the Sun. Still, I got to see the darkness fall and the experience was amazing! Eclipse glasses work by blocking certain wavelengths of light. They are made of different materials than sunglasses and are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses! That keeps your eyes safe when viewing the Sun. β˜€οΈπŸ•ΆοΈ

Hello, Russ. I hope you have a good day. And what are dinosaur bones made of?
Hello, Connor. When dinosaurs were alive, their bones were made of materials such as protein, collagen, and minerals. But after many, many years, the bones become fossils. These fossils form when water and pressure from layers of dirt turn the bones into rock. So, dinosaur bones today are made of rock! πŸ¦–πŸ¦•

Russ, how did you make this company?
I worked with two partners to create News-O-Matic. We believed young people deserved the chance to learn what was happening in their world. Then, we hired play experts to help us create an app and web site that young people would enjoy using. You can learn more about it by reading the article, "The Story of News-O-Matic."
