They’re diving deep, making comebacks, and saving lives. Numbers are busy. Let’s see what they are up to in the news!
534 Feet (163 Meters)
Lake St Clair on the island of Tasmania is the deepest lake in Australia. Experts didn’t know exactly how deep it went — until now! A team from the government science group CSIRO used advanced technology to make a map of the lakebed and shoreline. The map includes underwater cliffs, ravines, and rock formations. And it shows that Lake St Clair is 534 feet (163 m) deep!
137 Carats
The Florentine Diamond is a 137-carat yellow diamond. It once belonged to the Medici family, who ruled over Florence (now part of Italy). The large gem is named after Florence, but it didn’t stay there. The Florentine Diamond passed to the powerful Habsburg family in the 1700s. Then, it seemed to disappear around 1919. People thought it was lost, stolen, or broken into smaller pieces. Now, the Florentine Diamond has popped up again more than 100 years later. Habsburg
revealed that the diamond was in a bank vault in Quebec, Canada! They hope to put it in a museum.
2 Million Doses
HIV is a virus that can lead to many illnesses or even death. Scientists invented a medicine called lenacapavir. It protects people from an HIV infection. U.S. health officials approved the drug in June 2025, and now the life-saving medicine is spreading even farther. Eswatini and Zambia — two African nations that have been hit hard by the virus — each got 500 doses. This is just one step in the lenacapavir rollout. Officials plan to provide at least 2 million doses to nations most in need by 2028.
16–13
Many sports fans in Spain love fútbol. That’s the Spanish word for soccer. But on November 16, Spain got a taste of American football. NFL teams played a regular season game there for the first time! The Miami Dolphins and the Washington Commanders faced off at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. The game went into overtime, and the Dolphins squeaked out a 16–13 win. Spain is the sixth country outside of the United States to host an NFL game!
