Have you read The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss? In that book, two children are bored at home, wishing for something to do. Then, a cat comes into their lives! If you need something to do this summer, try whipping up a sweet Cat in the Hat lookalike. Made with bananas and strawberries, this cute cat kebab is fun to make and tasty to eat!
What You’ll Need
• Strawberries
• 1 banana
• Full-sized marshmallows
• A black food marker or writing gel
• Food
• Plate
• Knife (Have an adult help you handle the sharp object!)
Steps
1. Peel a banana and place it on a plate. Slice off the pointed tips. (You don’t need the tips, so eat them as an early treat!) Slice the rest of the banana into 1-inch (2.5-cm) thick pieces.
2. Rinse a few strawberries under water to clean them. Pull off the leaves and stem. Cut them into about 0.5-inch (1.2-cm) slices.
3. Slide a marshmallow onto the skewer, starting at the pointed end. Push it about 3 inches (7.6 cm) down the stick — not all the way to the bottom. This will be your cat’s head.
4. Next, slide on a flat piece of strawberry. Follow that with a banana piece. between strawberries and bananas to fill up the skewer. Put a pointed strawberry piece on last to top it off. These fruits make up the cat’s hat!
5. Use a black food marker to create the face. You could use black food gel or icing as well. Give the face two lines for eyebrows and two circles underneath for eyes. Add a nose and a smile. And don’t forget the whiskers!
6. Repeat Steps 1–5 to make as many Cat in the Hat kebabs as you’d like. Share the healthy snack!
