Saving Spots from History

Experts share a list of historic places at risk in America.

A town can tell a tale. And houses can hold history. These places must be protected. The National Trust for Historic aims to do that. On May 9, the group shared a list. It ranks “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.”

This year’s list includes all different kinds of spots. “The places come in all forms,” said Jay Clemens. He’s a leader of the Trust. Clemens added, “Losing them would us all.”

One city is Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston’s historic neighborhoods are on the list. That’s because of plans for a waterfront site. The area is called Union Pier. Businesses may get to build there. But this could put the neighborhoods at risk. Those areas have old .

Many Asian Americans live and work in Chinatowns. The list includes two Chinatowns. One is in Seattle, Washington. The other is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia Chinatown started in 1871. The 76ers basketball team may build an arena next to it. This could change the culture there.

The list also has buildings. L.V. Hull was an artist in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She found objects and painted them. Hull packed her pieces around her house and yard! Hull died in 2008. Many of her artworks were saved. Her home fell into though. Her friend wants money to make it an arts center.

The Osterman Gas Station is in Peach Springs, Arizona. It was built in 1929. It is on a famous highway called Route 66. The Hualapai Tribe owns the station. Its older members worked and hung out at the store. The gas station is closed. But the tribe hopes to restore the building.

Katherine Malone-France works with the Trust. She said these spots show the “power of place.” They let us see “history where it happened.”
