Diwali Lights Up!

Millions of people celebrate a Hindu event called Diwali.

Light darkness. And good beats evil. That’s a message of Diwali. Millions of people celebrate the festival each year. They light candles, firecrackers, and fireworks. The festival lasts for five days. It started on November 10. The main day of Diwali was on November 12.

Diwali is the Festival of Lights. It’s very important in the Hindu religion. People celebrate all over India. Diwali has spread around the world too.

“Diwali is one of the best holidays ever!” a kid named Ishaan said. “I always celebrate by making diyas.” Those are small lamps. They’re often made of clay. Ishaan said the diyas “light the way for the hero Ram.” That’s a Hindu god.

Some lights shined extra bright in 2023. A Diwali celebration in Ayodhya, India, broke a Guinness world record. People lit more than 2 million oil lamps! The lights burned for 45 minutes.

Another big part of Diwali is being with family and friends. People may light firecrackers, eat sweets, and wear new clothes. Some people make designs out of colored powder. This is called rangoli. The designs may use chalk, paint, and flower petals too!

There are also some challenges with Diwali. The   add smoke to India’s air. And the nation already has high levels of air pollution. Luckily, rain and wind helped clear the air for Diwali 2023.

This shows that even in dark times, light moments can come out on top. And that’s what Diwali is all about!
