People around the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year on January 22. That holiday is especially big in Asian cultures. In most nations, the upcoming year is called the Year of the Rabbit. People hope it will bring furry good luck.
One fun dessert has luck right in the name. Have you ever cracked open a cookie? The folded snack holds a piece of paper inside. The writing on the paper can be words of wisdom, a for the future, or even a string of lucky numbers. Let’s learn how to make a fortune cookie craft — with our own happy messages — out of paper!
What You’ll Need
• Red, orange, and/or yellow paper or cardstock
• White paper
• 1 round bowl about 4-5 inches (10-12 cm) wide
• Double-sided tape or glue
• Scissors
• Pen
• Pencil
Steps
1. Turn the bowl upside-down on the colored paper.
2. Use a pencil to lightly trace the bowl’s shape onto the paper.
3. Cut the circle out with scissors. This will become your cookie!
4. Cut thin strips of the white paper. The strips should be wide enough to write on and a little bit shorter than your circle is wide. These strips will be your fortunes.
5. Use your pen to write positive and messages on the strips. Each strip gets one short message. News-O-Matic wrote:

6. It’s time to fold! Cut a small piece of double-sided tape and stick it on the edge of the circle at any point. From the taped spot, curl the paper to make a cylinder shape like a cannoli or burrito. Press the edges together where the tape is. The paper should stick in that shape.
7. Slide a fortune strip into the paper tube.
8. Put your thumb in one end of the tube and your pointer or middle finger in the other. Carefully pull the ends together. The seam from your curl should stay facing out as you do this. A should form in the middle of the tube.
9. Put double-sided tape or glue in the crease and stick the two sides together. The resulting shape should look like a jumbo fortune cookie.
10. Make as many “cookies” as you want and pass them out. Happy New Year!
