People have been scrolling along with TikTok since 2018. That’s when the app launched. Since then, users have had fun posting short videos of jokes, dances, and more. Now, TikTok has more fans than ever before. On Monday, the TikTok team made an announcement. The app passed 1 billion active users!
TikTok posted a video to celebrate this . “Over 1 billion people come to TikTok to be entertained,” Vanessa Pappas said. She is a leader at the company. “That’s 1 billion people watching and sharing each other’s creativity,” she added. “I want to say thank you.”
TikTok had just 55 million users back in January 2018. Last summer, the app hit 689 million users. That means more than 300 million people have started using TikTok in the past year! Some experts think this is because of the pandemic. More people stayed home. They turned to TikTok for entertainment.
The app’s growth has challenged other social media sites. For example, Instagram has been around since 2010. That app has about 1 billion active users each month. And it hit phones eight years before TikTok. In August 2020, Instagram launched Reels. This move was to with TikTok. Reels lets users share more videos.
TikTok may continue to grow. Or perhaps a new app will come along and steal the scrolls. But for now, the company seems happy about hitting the 1 billion mark.
“We couldn’t do this without you,” Pappas added in her video. “So thanks a billion for making TikTok a truly special place!”
