Make a Menorah!

Decorate for Hanukkah with a craft that shines bright.

Happy Hanukkah! Millions of people are lighting candles for that Jewish holiday. The candles stand tall in a holder called a menorah. You don’t need wax and fire to celebrate Hanukkah though. Learn to make your own menorah out of paper!

What You’ll Need
• Cardstock or construction paper — You’ll need both blue and a color that looks like gold (either gold, yellow, or orange).
• Glue or tape (Liquid glue or a glue stick both work.)
• Scissors
• Black and orange markers
• Optional: a ruler and pencil

Steps
1. A Strong Foundation
Take your “gold” paper. Fold it in half, like when you make a card. Starting on the folded edge, cut half a circle. Once the paper is unfolded, it should make a full circle! This is the base of your menorah.

2. Snip, Snip!
Take the leftover gold paper and cut nine rectangle shapes that are 0.75 inches (2 cm) wide and about 1 inch (2.5 cm) high. These will be the candle holders. Using more of the gold paper, cut nine flame shapes. Then move to the blue paper. Cut nine rectangles that are 0.5 inches (1.25 cm) wide and 2 inches (5 cm) high. These will be the candles.

TIP: Use a pencil to draw your shapes before you cut!

3. Fiery Details
Use markers to add detail to your paper fire. You can color in a small orange flame shape in the middle. Then take the black marker and draw a small line in the middle. This will be the of the candle.

4. Coming Together
Grab your circle from Step 1, and keep it folded. Choose one side of this menorah base to be the back. Then, glue your candle holders to the back along the folded edge. Glue the flames to the back of the candles. Once it’s all dry, glue the candles to the back of the candle holders. All done!

You don’t want to actually light your menorah on fire. But your artwork is sure to shine on its own!
