Ruth Bader Ginsburg at 85!

A longtime Supreme Court justice celebrates a big birthday.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg made history. She was at the top of her class in college. Ginsburg later taught law. She also fought for women’s rights. In 1993, she became the second woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. On Thursday, Ginsburg turned 85 years old. And she isn’t done yet!

Ginsburg was born in 1933. She lived in Brooklyn, New York. She looked up to her mother. Cecelia Bader taught her to be independent and value education. These lessons stayed with Ginsburg.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton chose Ginsburg to be a Supreme Court justice. This is an important job. The Supreme Court is the top court. It has nine justices. Their decisions affect the whole nation. Ginsburg helped decide many big cases. And she spoke out for equality.

Ginsburg is the oldest justice. However, she doesn’t plan to retire soon. When a justice leaves, the president picks someone to fill the spot. Ginsburg doesn’t want that to happen. So she is still working.

The justice does exercises to stay healthy. She also speaks at universities. The justice has a lot of fans. There are several books about Ginsburg. And a documentary about her comes out this year.

Ginsburg gets a lot of attention. “I am soon to be 85,” she said last month. “And everyone wants to take their picture with me!”

Happy birthday, Justice Ginsburg!
