TeachRock helps students learn, using the power of music.

Music brings people together. People use it to connect, celebrate, and . After all, dancing and singing are fun. But songs can teach you about the world too. A group called TeachRock is using music to help kids learn!

“TeachRock tries to create a really interesting entryway into learning,” said Bill Carbone. He leads the group. TeachRock helps teachers use music in their lessons. These lessons connect music to many other subjects, such as social studies and geography. Students may learn what the world was like when a song came out. Or they could point out a singer’s city on a map.

“It’s a way to teach the things that have to be taught — but very ,” Carbone told News-O-Matic. When students are excited about music, they are excited to learn!

The doesn't just make learning fun. It highlights why the arts are important. Steven Van Zandt is a rock ’n’ roll musician. He is also the founder of TeachRock. He struggled with school when he was a teen. “Then the Beatles saved my life,” Van Zandt said. That British rock band shot to fame in the 1960s. Van Zandt explained, “The arts gave me the to forge a path in the world.”

Recently, some schools stopped focusing on the arts. But Van Zandt hopes music will help students. TeachRock has been used in schools all over the United States. Will Mosley is a teacher in Brooklyn, New York. He said, “TeachRock makes my students excited about coming to school again.”

Now it is Connecticut’s turn to learn through music! Last month in Hartford, a state official said some schools will begin using TeachRock. Officials hope to help kids whose learning has been impacted by the pandemic.

Carbone is excited for TeachRock to spread. “As we reopen schools, officials are saying that they want to use the arts,” he said. “They want to meet the kids in a really happy place and bring them back in joyously.”

TeachRock hopes to impact students’ learning — and their lives. Carbone had this advice for kids: “If you love music, explore it. Explore everything about it.”
